DASH® Rapid PCR System

THE PRODUCT
The Nuclein DASH® is a compact, fully automated molecular testing device that delivers PCR-level accuracy in just 15 minutes. Traditional rapid tests sacrifice accuracy for speed, while lab-based PCR tests take days to process. DASH® eliminates this tradeoff, providing reliable, lab-quality results in a portable format, making fast and accurate testing accessible outside traditional laboratory settings.
HOW IT WORKS
The test is simple: a nasal swab is inserted into a single-use cartridge, which is then placed into the DASH analyzer. The device fully automates the PCR process – extracting viral RNA, amplifying DNA, and detecting the virus using fluorescence technology. The result is displayed on the device, giving healthcare workers a quick and reliable positive or negative result without needing specialized lab equipment.
MY CONTRIBUTIONS
- Industrial Design – Defined the overall form and styling of the outer enclosures to create a compact and user centric design
- Physical User Interface Design – Proposed and designed the time indicator for clear and intuitive feedback during the testing process
- Detailed Part Design – Developed the injection-molded front enclosure, ensuring proper draft angles, parting lines, and manufacturability
- DFMA Consulting – Optimized internal frame components, refined the assembly sequence, and improved wiring routing for efficient manufacturing and serviceability.

Styling Considerations

Physical User Interface
I proposed and designed the physical user interface (PUI), in the form of an LED ring surrounding the power button which visually communicates the test’s progress.
The lights mimic the ticks of a clock, with light segments gradually illuminating as the 15-minute test progresses. When inactive, the LEDs remain hidden behind the front decal for a clean, minimalist appearance. Color and pattern variations can also communicate system states (progress, standby, or error) providing intuitive, glanceable feedback.
Final Product
Minute Molecular Prototype
As consultants we did not have much control over colors and finish. The client went against our recommendation to use Minute Molecular blue and white as seen in the styling sketches.
Nuclein Production Unit
In 2023 Minute Molecular Diagnostics was acquired by Nuclein LLC. The new ownership made some improvements including a handsome new color spec, branding and replacing the wand with a more sanitary scanner.
